Technology tools for teaching and learning are booming in K-12 classrooms everywhere. Teachers are using multiple tools for all types of reasons. And Google Classroom has become a popular option as a Learning Management System (LMS) for its ease of use and integration with other Google Workspace apps.
Integrating technology in the classroom is a bit of a mixed bag. Some teachers have a real knack for using technology as a multiplier in their ability to engage students with the subject. Like any technology on the market, there are advantages and disadvantages to its use. There are times when classroom tech can feel like a real burden. When you have to learn how to use a new system, or there are constantly changes to the UI that you need to re-learn, it becomes time consuming.
One of those questions that come up often is the simple management of which students should be in which classrooms, and how to enroll and unenroll from a Google Classroom when needed.
Luckily, Google makes unenrolling students from a class in Google Classroom very easy for teachers (or owners of a class). Read on to learn how you can unenroll a student from a Google Classroom whether you’re using a computer, Android, or Apple mobile device.
There are a handful of reasons why you may need to unenroll a student from your class in Google Classroom:
Remember that, when you unenroll a student, they will lose access to all course materials, assignments, announcements, and ongoing communications associated with that class. They can, however, still access the class’s files in Google Drive by gaining access through the class’s administrator.
Here’s how you can unenroll your students from a class on a computer or an Android or Apple mobile device.
Cloud Monitor by ManagedMethods has Google Classroom management tools for IT admins that simply aren’t currently available in Admin console—and that K12 techs love.
Austin Hunter, the Technology Analyst at New Albany-Floyd County School Corporation, explains: “ManagedMethods’ interface is cleaner and easier to use than Google’s Admin Console. Its Classroom admin feature is also great because it provides us with information and admin controls that simply doesn’t exist in Google at this time.”
The ability to bulk or individually unenroll students from a Google Classroom is just one of these tools.
Unenrolling students using Cloud Monitor is easy. In platform, navigate to the specific Google Classroom you wish to manage. Once inside, you can use the search capabilities to locate the student you want to unenroll. After selecting the student, click the ‘actions’ button in the top right corner of the interface. From there, you will see the option to remove the student. You can also unenroll multiple students by clicking the checkbox next to each student account.
Beyond being able to seamlessly unenroll students, your district’s Google admin can also use Cloud Monitor to delete classrooms, archive classes, transfer ownership of the class, add or remove co-teachers, and add students.
You can also pull Google Classroom reports to see which classes are active, provisioned, archived, or orphaned. Quickly finding orphaned Google Classrooms is particularly useful for admins, as these are classes that no longer have an owner, or teacher, and can lead to students using the class for non-educational purposes.
To that end, Cloud Monitor will also monitor Google Classrooms for safety risks, so if students are putting inappropriate text or images into a class announcement it’ll notify the person set up to respond to those kinds of incidents.
Ultimately, schools rely on Cloud Monitor to provide comprehensive visibility and control over their entire Google Workspace environment, including Classroom.
This reliance strengthens your district’s overall cybersecurity and safety posture. Using Cloud Monitor, you can proactively safeguard sensitive student and staff data through advanced threat detection and continuous monitoring of your Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 environments.
Speaking on this, Stephen Guass, network administrator of Gadsden County Public Schools, said: “Google Workspace has its own scanning system, but it runs in the background and it’s not reported very well. We couldn’t see our overall status or what was happening in our domain. We definitely couldn’t see any attacks coming in or how our users were acting online. With Cloud Monitor, we can catch and remediate cybersecurity issues quickly. There’s no way our small team could stay on top of it all while also supporting our students, faculty, and staff.”
